Kvara side table

Kvara is a heavy-duty side table made from mild steel. The table, in the form of a letter Z, is raw, heavy and unyielding. Heat treated to create the form, the design has a natural finish with noticeable temper marks.Ā ///Description
Inspired by the brutality and simplicity of theĀ substanceĀ it was made from, Kvara is made from 300mm wide flat bar mild steel - a material ordinarily cut and welded to be part of a much bigger civil engineering structure. The manufacture of the Kvara side table reflects and honours this intended function. Working with industrial fabricators in Hull, UK, Kvara is pressed and folded with crude, yet beautiful tooling -Ā machines which have barely changed since the birth of the industrial revolution.
With manufacturing marks and lines telling the story of its creation, designer Oscar Coakley hand files back the sharp edges and meticulously peens them with a ball headed hammer to achieve an edge characteristic of the rough, unyielding nature of the piece, while being safe to the touch. The entireĀ story of the piece remains exposed, protected only by a clear matte lacquer; to glorify the material, its process and its heritage.
